Bulletproof Coffee and Intermittent Fasting revisited

Now, lets get into todays topic:

What is bulletproof or fatty coffee?

A mix of freshly brewed coffee, grass-fed butter and MCT oil. Some people like to use Coconut oil instead of MCT oil or heavy cream instead of butter.

First off, if you’re still eating a standard diet that is high in carbs, it’s definitely a bad idea. You never want to mix high carb and high fat.

Now, it’s great if you’re just starting on Keto and to adapt to having more fats and feeling more satisfied. When I mixed my coffee with mct oil and butter it was one of the first times I was able to experience some of the energy, mental clarity and freedom from hunger that you get on Keto. It was one of the things that made me want to experiment further and it was the first time I attempted any sort of intermittent fasting, even though that’s technically not pure intermittent fasting but fat-fasting, you still get some of the benefits. I think in that sense it’s a great sort of gateway-drug for people to try out when they’re starting Keto. When you’re starting out you should be less concerned about the calories you consume anyway and consume the same amount of calories you were eating on your previous diet, as you don’t want to stress your body any more when it’s adapting to Ketosis. So feel free to add as much fat to your morning coffee as you need to stay full until lunchtime. Especially the MCT oil in the coffee can be very helpful, as your liver is able to easily convert it into ketones and thus provides you with a quick energy source.

But if you’ve been doing Keto for a while, you might realize, a black coffee or tea is all you need in the morning (you’re also likely to be much less hungry so you don’t need to add fat and can do a real intermittent fast until lunchtime!), and you’re able to access your own body fat for energy instead of first using the fat you’re eating. So your body will save 400 calories and have to burn them off your body instead. Especially if your fat loss has been stalling for a while, this can be a fantastic strategy to help you break through a plateau. If you tried this and you want to take it a step further, check out my video on 24 hour fasting.

An easy approach would be to try and lower the amount of fat you add to your coffee/tea gradually and see what the minimum amount is that you need to not get hungry before lunchtime. You might realize that the 40g of fat you’ve been adding every day to your coffee or tea aren’t necessary to keep you satisfied until lunch, and a black coffee or tea is all you need – especially after your body gets used to not eating before lunchtime. Actually, my own girlfriend Zsofia was stalling for a while until she stopped making fatty coffees in the morning and started drinking a black coffee instead. She noticed that she still doesn’t get hungry until lunch on most days and was able to break through her plateau.

My own approach: I personally don’t need to lose weight or get any more ripped right now and I already don’t consume that many calories on a daily basis, because I only eat twice a day (most comfortable for me), and usually don’t feel the need to snack in between. Since I’m mostly eating whole foods -veggies, organic meat/fish plus healthy fats, it’s very easy for me to eat less calories than I burn. Thus, a fatty coffee or tea on most days in the morning helps me reach my caloric goal (which is maintenance for me). But sometimes I just drink a black coffee until lunch, also to enjoy it’s pure taste a little more. Generally speaking, I simply love the comfort of not having to prepare breakfast in the morning, so I only eat breakfast once to twice a week, usually following a workout day.

If you’re interested in anything related to fasting, no matter whether you’re following a Ketogenic Diet or not, we highly recommend you get this book.
